Best of Beauty 2016 Drugstore

2017 IS HERE!

With the start of the new year comes reflection, resolutions, and goals. Whether you are deciding to do a cleanse, a new exercise routine, or rid a bad habit, I think it is important to set a purpose to live by at the beginning of each year. My main focus this year is to do more activities and hobbies that make me happy. I work for a digital marketing firm and in combination with my blog, I am constantly on the computer or my phone. In 2017, I want to try and put the phone down, close the computer and get out and be active and do more things that I love. I signed up for a yoga membership, I made a pledge to read 15 books this year with Goodreads, and am hoping to sign up for an art class in the Spring (open to suggestions if you know of any in the Chicago area). I would love to hear your plans for 2017 – leave comments below if you would like to share!

In the beauty and fashion blog industry the beginning of January means tons of videos and blog posts on the best beauty products of 2016. Personally, I spent a lot of time in 2016 trying out new drugstore beauty products and finding dups for my favorite high-end products. As of lately a lot of drugstore brands are having their moment and are frequently putting new products on the shelf. I decided this year for my best of beauty blog post, I would focus on my favorite skincare, makeup, and hair products I discovered at the drugstore in 2016. The below 20 products may not have necessarily come out in the year 2016, however, these were products that I found myself constantly grabbing for in beauty routine.

1. Garnier SkinActive Micellar Water & Makeup Remover $8.99

For YEARS I used the Neutrogena makeup wipes. I tried the Garnier Micellar water once and never turned back. The Micellar Water not only removes hard to remove makeup, it cleanses your skin. I use it in combination with cotton rounds from Ulta. I also love the Micellar Water because it isn’t wasteful. You can use smaller to larger amounts of the Micellar Water depending on how much product you are wearing on a given day.

2. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Rose Velvet $8.49

The Revlon Super Lustrious Lipstick in Rose Velvet is by far my favorite nude lip of 2016. I love it paired with my Buxom Full-On Lip Polish in Dolly.

3.  Caress Body Wash in Gorgeous $5.49

You have never smelled a body wash like this in your life. The Caress Body Wash in Gorgeous has the smell of a Bath & Body Works body wash, with a drugstore budget.

4.  CoverGirl TruBlend Primer in Combination $9.99

It seemed like everywhere I turned beauty bloggers and magazines were raving about this primer. What’s not to love? It is super lightweight, smoothes out my face, and makes for a great canvas to apply foundation to. Personally, I think that it makes my makeup stay on longer. I had been previously using the Rimmel Stay Matte Primer. I do love the TruBlend primer A LOT more. The Rimmel primer to me is too greasy. The TruBlend Primer also comes in 3 different variations for different skin tips: dry, combo and oily.

5. CoverGirl Trublend Blush in Medium Rose $9.99

If you are looking for a mauvy baked blush, this is your go to. I love it for a natural no-makeup look, as it is not super pigmented.

6. Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner in Blackest Black $8.99

I bought the Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Eyeliner in the spring, I finally just ran out in the beginning of December. Not only does this product last you forever, it won’t smudge or transfer to your eyelids, it is easy to apply, and is long wear. I have a tough time finding an eyeliner that works to me because my eyes have a tendency to water. This eyeliner passes the watery eye test

7. Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation in 122 Creamy Beige $7.99

The Maybelline Fit Me Matte foundation joined my makeup collection late in 2016. I have used the Tarte Amazonian Clay foundation for as long as I can remember. Lately, it has been feeling thick and dry on my skin. I also wanted to find a foundation that won’t break the bank. After trying many different foundations, I found my perfect match. I absolutely love the way the Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless foundation feels and looks on my skin. It gives me that super dewy and glowing look but is not greasy. It layers well and does not look cakey. My only complaint about this foundation is the bottle, I wish it had a pump.

8.  L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara in Blackest Black $8.99

Do I even need to explain?  I have gone on and on about the L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara. I know you guys are probably getting sick of hearing about this mascara, however, I truly think it is the best mascara on the market. I promise in 2017 I will try out some new mascaras!

9.  Rimmel London Lasting Lipstick Kate Moss Collection in 107 $5.49

If you are looking for a long-lasting, matte, berry lipstick – the Rimmel London Lasting Lipstick Kate Moss Collection in 107 is your go to. This was by far my favorite berry matte lipstick in 2016.

10. NYX Cosmetics Dewy Makeup Setting Spray $7.99

If you are looking for a dewy makeup look that will last FOREVER, you need the NYX Dewy Makeup Setting spray. As you know, I am a huge fan of a glowing makeup look. This setting spray really does have the ability to set your makeup and give it a glowing appearance all day.

11.  NYX Cosmetics Concealer In A Jar in Green $4.99

I had mixed feelings about this concealer. This is actually the first green concealer I have ever tried, so that could also be why. The first few times I used this concealer I think I was applying too much product. Dip your beauty blender in the jar and apply just a dab to red and troublesome areas. I also use my Shape Tape concealer over the green concealer to eliminate a little bit of the green appearance. If you have acne or any red bumps on your skin this is great for added coverage under your normal concealer.

12. NYX Cosmetics Twin Cake Powder in True Beige $13.99

The NYX Cosmetics Twin Cake Powder was by far my favorite drugstore find in 2016. This product took me by complete surprise. I was not expecting to like a powder with the “cake” in the name, considering my goal is to not look cakey. However, this powder is the perfect color for my skin tone right now, it is super creamy, easy to apply,  and feels like a high-end powder. I was looking for a replacement for my IT Cosmetics Perfecting Finishing Powder, and the Twin Cake Powder was my favorite replacement product. The only major difference is that the Twin Cake Powder is a little heavier than the IT Cosmetics Perfecting Finishing Powder. Personally, I prefer the Twin Cake as it provides additional coverage to my foundation.

13. NYX Cosmetics Angel Veil Perfecting Primer $15.99

This is another amazing primer that I discovered from my cousin’s beauty Instagram @marissas_makeuplan. The formula in this is truly amazing. It isn’t greasy or thick. This primer is great for perfecting skin and filling in fine lines and pores.

14. NYX Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Cream in Budapest $5.99

This truly is a fan fave for all makeup lovers. I don’t know why it took me until this year to try it out. If you haven’t jumped on the liquid lip bandwagon yet, the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream is a great place to start. The formula is super creamy and easy to work with. It dries extremely matte – which I love. My favorite part of the Soft Matte Lip Cream formula is that it layers really well. No matter how much product you pack on your lips, it doesn’t get thick and crack. This is often a problem I run into with liquid lips, as it takes me a few layers to get the perfect application.

15. Physicians Formula Murumuru Butter Bronzer in Bronzer $14.99

If you have fair skin – you need this bronzer. I love using the Butter Bronzer to contour my face, as it is not ashy or too harsh for my light skin. It is SUPER creamy, making it easy to blend. The smell is absolutely AMAZING. If you have medium to dark skin, unfortunately, there really is not much in terms of bronzer and contour products with Physicians Formula. I really wish they would create some darker products so all skin tones can try out the butter bronzer.

16.  Makeup Revolution The Matte Blush in Nude $5.00

Don’t be fooled by the color name “nude”. This is a SUPER pigmented peachy blush. A little goes a long way with this blush, try to avoid using a heavy hand. The peach shade of this blush is absolutely gorgeous and pairs well with any makeup look.

17. Makeup Revolution Vivid Baked Bronzer in Golden Days $6.00

This is by far the best-baked drugstore bronzer I have found. It is super pigmented and the perfect warm bronzer shade for contouring. The Golden Days bronzer is great for fair skin with a light hand or medium skin if you use a heavier hand when applying. Personally, I prefer the butter bronzer to the Makeup Revolution Vivid Baked Bronzer. However, if I am looking for something a little bit more pigmented to make a statement with my contour – this is my go to.

18. Makeup Revolution Vivid Baked Highlighter in Peach Lights $6.00

Makeup Revolutions products are so pigmented it is crazy. This highlighter is absolutely gorgeous with their Matte Blush in Nude. This really is not too peachy when you swatch it or look at it in the pan, however, on the skin it does give off a peachy illuminated look.

19. Big Sexy Hair Dy Shampoo $17.95

I had mixed feelings about the Big Sexy Hair Dry Shampoo the first few times I tried it. However, after doing some research I realized I was doing it all wrong. All you need is the tiniest spray to put this dry shampoo to use. Too much product will leave your hair with a weird powdery film. It is a bit pricey, however, since you use such a small amount it will last you a long time. I have tried my fair share of drugstore dry shampoos. I also really love the Not Your Mothers Dry Shampoo. Recently, I have been washing my hair less and less. I am now down to only twice a week. I didn’t really feel like the Not Your Mothers Dry Shampoo was getting the job down and I need something a little more powerful. Not only does the Big Sexy Hair Dry Shampoo smell great, it leaves my hair feeling clean on day 3 of not washing.

20. Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play Volumizing Hairspray $17.95

The Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play Volumizing Hairspray is a fan favorite, and there is a good reason why. I use this hairspray in 3 different ways. First, I use it to dirty perfectly clean hair before styling. Second, I use it add volume to an otherwise flat look. Lastly, I use it to keep a wave, curl, or straight look for hours on end. You will be amazed at what this hairspray can do for you. Check out Ulta’s website too, they often have great deals for Big Sexy Hair products.
